Improve and maintain facial skin health by cleansing the skin correctly and using the right facial cleanser.

With the amount of make-up, creams, sunscreens and dirt a woman has on her face, it is little wonder that she needs to diligently cleanse her face daily. After all, a clean face is the basis of a beautiful face. Learn some quick tips from the experts to cleanse the face properly.

Avoid Overcleansing

Overcleansing removes the skin’s underlayers of its natural protective properties, resulting in dryness and skin sensitivity, says Esme Floyd, author of 1001 Little Beauty Miracles (Australia: Penguins Book, 2006). “Make sure you use a cleanser that’s right for your skin type and don’t over do it,” she writes.

Deep Cleanse to Remove Impurities

Floyd also suggests practicing deep cleansing regularly to remove impurities. A quick solution is by using a homemade concoction of hot boiling water, lemon juice and rose petals in a large bowl. Hold the face over the bowl while covering the head with a towel. The resulting steam will open pores and help loosen blackheads. Cleanse normally afterwards and end the procedure with a cool water rinse to close the pores.

Cleanse around the Edges of Face

The face actually consists of the area between the hairline and the collarbone. When cleansing, make sure this entire area, including the neck skin, is covered. Also, after a wild night out, most hair products will end up past the hairline and jaw line. So make sure you cleanse around the edges of the face properly. Don’t forget the tip of the nose too. Small circular motions are ideal to clean the nose.

Keep Hair Off the Skin

Hair is naturally greasy overnight. Too much hair falling all over the face or rubbing against the skin while you sleep can cause greasy skin, resulting in blemishes and spots. So keep the hair clean and off the face as much as possible to prevent that.

Change Facial Cleanser with the Weather

Juliet Cohen, former beauty editor of Tatler and author of Vogue Make-up (London: Carlton Books, 2001) says it’s advisable to change the facial cleanser with the weather. “Harsh winds in winter and hot sunshine in summer can be drying, and affect the behavior of the epidermis,” she writes.

Watch out for Sell-by Dates on Cleansers

Cohen also points out that all skincare products have certain sell-by dates. For cleansers, they should be okay for use for up to eight to 10 weeks. So avoid using the same tube of cleanser for more than that duration.

Use Moisturizing Creams as Cleansers

Hugh Molloy and Garry Egger, authors of Skin Fitness (Australia: Allen & Unwin, 2008), suggest using a moisturizing cream mixed with water as a skin cleanser. “Grease can be satisfactorily removed from the skin by dissolving it in another grease which dissolves in water,” they write.

Good facial skincare starts with proper cleansing. To maintain facial skin health while cleansing, try to avoid overcleansing, deep cleanse to remove impurities, cleanse all around the edges of the face, keep the hair off the skin, change the cleanser with the weather or use a moisturizing cream mixed with water as a cleanser. The face will feel clean, healthy and supple.
