Fruits, vegetables, milk, oatmeal and honey can be used to heal blemishes as well as clean and moisturize the skin.

Regardless of one’s skin type there are numerous natural facial recipes and a variety of soothing ingredients that can be used for cleaning, toning and moisturizing. Face masks, cleansers, soothers, toners, moisturizers and blemish treatments can be made using every day food items.

Cucumber Spa Facial Steam

Facial steams are effective for unclogging pores; removing impurities and making the skin feel soft and smooth.

Materials Needed

  • Water
  • Cucumber slices
  • Bowl
  • Hair band
  • Towel

Boil a pot of water and then allow the water to simmer for about 5 minutes. Turn off the heat and pour the water into a bowl until the bowl is filled halfway. Add sliced cucumber pieces or shredded cucumber into the water and let soak for 3 minutes.

Use a hair band to keep hair off the face or tie hair back into in to a ponytail. Lean over the bowl and drape a towel over both head and bowl. Keep the face approximately 12 inches above the bowl to prevent burning of the skin. Steam the face for approximately 7-10 minutes over the cucumber water mix. Keep the face approximately 12 inches above the bowl to prevent burning of the skin.

Other Facial Steam Ingredients that can be Used Include:

  • Mint tea leaves
  • Lemon slices
  • Orange slices
  • Fresh rosemary
  • Rose petals

Individuals with pre-existing skin concerns such as rosacea, sunburn or broken capillaries should avoid facial steams as they can aggravate the skin.

Strawberries and Baking Soda Face Scrub

Facial scrubs are a great way to exfoliate the skin, remove impurities, eliminate blackheads and improve skin tone.

Materials Needed

  • Small bowl
  • 2 teaspoons of baking soda
  • 2 mashed strawberries
  • A touch of water

In a small bowl combine the baking soda and strawberries together to form a gritty paste. Add water if needed to smooth out the paste.

A facial scrub can be applied and massaged into the skin with the tips of the fingers, a face brush or a sponge. Apply the paste to the skin of the face and massage into the skin using small circular motions. Be careful to avoid the eye and neck area to prevent aggravation of delicate skin. When complete, rinse the face with warm water and repeat if desired.

Other Facial Scrub Recipes Include:

  • 1 tsp honey and 1 tsp sugar
  • 2 tsp of powdered milk, 1 tsp honey and 1 tsp of yogurt
  • 1 tsp of ground oats, 1 tsp of lemon juice and 1 tsp of milk
  • 2 tsp of cornmeal and 1 tsp of water

When trying a new facial scrub recipe be sure to do a patch test on the skin prior to applying the mask to the face. If irritation occurs do not apply the scrub to the facial area.

Soothing Banana n’ Honey Mask

A face mask is one of the most relaxing components of a facial. Masks can be applied and left on the skin for 10-15 minutes and are often used to moisturize the skin, tighten pores, eliminate impurities and improve skin texture.

Materials Needed

  • Small bowl
  • 1/2 mashed banana
  • 1 tbsp of honey

In a small bowl combine the banana and honey together to form a smooth paste. Add water if needed to smooth out the paste. Apply the mask to the face and neck area, avoiding the delicate skin around the eyes, and leave on for 10-15 minutes.

When complete wipe off the mask with a damp cloth and then rinse the face thoroughly with warm water.

Other Facial Mask Recipes Include:

  • 1 grated apple, 2 tsp honey and 1 tbsp of steel cut oats
  • 1 avocado mashed and _ tsp plain yogurt
  • 1 tsp olive oil, 1 tsp honey and 3 tbsp of mashed cucumber

To create a smooth facial mask that glides onto the skin place all ingredients for a mask recipe into a blender and blend for approximately 2-3 minutes. A patch test on the skin is important prior to the application of a face mask to ensure no adverse or allergic reactions to the facial ingredients.

Homemade facials are a great way to save money and enjoy a facial at home. Simple ingredients from the kitchen can be used to clean the face, remove impurities, eliminate blackheads, reduce pore size and hydrate the skin.
