» Feature Writer Victoria Anisman-Reiner - Cyclic - not quite "natural"

Hi Chrissy,

I wanted to comment on your mention of Cyclic as a "100% natural skin care" product.

I've checked out the product's website, and among the ingredients listed is "silica" - the stuff used to absorb moisture, that you'll often run into as those little packets in supplement bottles and shoe boxes.

Silica is not natural, and may be poisonous when ingested. I tend to caution people against using anything on their skin that is not safe to eat - because your skin absorbs so much of what you put on it.

It's a disappointing, but all-too-common, marketing ploy - a lot of synthetic products are being marketed as "natural" lately - up to and including the Body Shop.

» Feature Writer Victoria Anisman-Reiner - Not quite "natural" - correction and addendum

In response to Cyclic - not quite "natural" posted by OilsDragon:

Pardon me for putting my foot in my mouth, Chrissy.

After further reading about silica, it appears that it CAN be natural - appearing as quartz and other kinds of crystal - but that several forms are synthesized artificially. Most types of silica are considered unsafe to ingest or inhale, but it's not clear from the information I have whether or not the silica in Cyclic is natural, or which form it is they're using.

My comments here were not intended as a criticism of this product in particular, but more a general comment on the abuse of the word "natural" in marketing beauty products. We might have fodder for an article here happy

Sorry if I stepped on your toes with my earlier comment.
